Historic British Signs

It is said that sign history in Britain started with invading roman legions looking for a place to get a good drink. The Romans back home in what is modern day Italy would mark their drinking locals with a sign of hanging grape vine leaves. So the romans not wanting to reinvent the wheel did the same thing in the British isles only substituting a hanging bush instead of grape vines since grape vines were not readily available locally.

The Brits can do it better!

The British are a stalwart bunch not to be outdone easily . With that in mind and being masters at brewing ale it is only natural to see that the English pub owners were soon outdoing anything their italian roman conquer ers could come up with once they threw them out. They came up colorful elaborately carved and painted pub signs which are as beautiful today as they were in the distant past.

English pub signs are both well crafted and delightfully painted in bright distinctive colors. These signs usually bear the names of historical figures both heroes and pirates alike. The signs can also bear the names of nobility or important events in history like waterloo or otherwise. The fact is some of these pubs have been in business for hundreds of years and are quite historic. Needless to say drinking ale in Britain is a serious business and a time honored tradition and thus a truly great sign for your Pub or bar is mandatory.

The British besides being great sign painters wood carvers and ale brewers are also skilled workers of wrought iron and steel. Beautiful historic pub signs are also likely to have a very nice wrought iron sign hanger. The brit's are a very creative and skilled metal workers and some of their hangers are as artful as the signs that hang beneath them. Many of these hangers were made before the advent of modern welding so they were meticulously riveted, bent and hammered into shape by capable blacksmiths.
