Why a webpage on the history of signs?

I have to admit I'm pretty ate up with the whole sign thing, I am a second generation artist in my family and I've been able to sell art before but I've never been quite able to enjoy it quite as much as when I'm making signs. I've been able to make a decent buck at making signs and loving every bit of the challenges my customers put me up to carving different 3D scenes and lettering into wood panels or high density foam. So with that in mind I decided I needed to give something back to the subject that has treated me so well. I decided to do my own research and compile different eras of human existance and post my articles here for your enjoyment.

What Constitutes a Sign?

Thats a good question and one that deserves to be aswered. A lot of this is my opinion so bear with me if I'm a little biased about the subject. But here goes, A sign in my view is a form of advertisement, but with that said a sign is also a form of raw information, take for instance a sign which is used to mark a bathroom, we certainly are not trying to sell the bathroom but lead you to it. Therefore a sign is sometimes an advertisement and sometimes just contains important information. With some fancy signs like the ones I make, signs can be a decoration that contain important information. The fact is in its rawest forn signs could be construed to go back to the origins of man. When early man ventured out of the cave did he leave markers(signs?) to find his way back to his loved ones back at the cave. Did he mark with signs his hunting areas to ward off his hunting competition? We don't know, were the cave paintings purely art or were they a form of sign, Remember it is a thin line between art and sign. Did Napoleon see and read road signs on his way to Waterloo and his eventual defeat? Read on and find out.
