CARVED WOOD SIGNS | What is Better a Wood or HDU
Sign?
Its a tough question and a lot depends on the specific application of the sign.
Wood signs can be used successfully for exterior use but precautions must be taken throughout the sign fabrication process. Firstly the correct grain lumber must be chosen, This is usually heartwood with vertical grain. An alternative to softwood would be rainforest hardwoods which are extremely rot resistant and when aged and dried properly they remain relatively stable.
Due to the fact that natural woods have such a beautiful grain and machine well sometimes there is no replacement for a wood sign. and as long as the sign is used in an interior situation the sign will last for years. If the wood sign is built well treated and painted correctly it will also last for years in an exterior situation as well, just not as well as an HDU sign.
HDU on the other hand is completely rot resistant and is completely stable so it will not warp or check. HDU is an ideal choice for a sign, it machines very well, is easy to work with and also holds paint with a tenacious grip. The only thing that HDU lacks is a wood grain so it has to be completely painted.
WHAT IS HDU:
HDU or high density urethane foam is a very stiff material that is made through a chemical reaction of several chemicals. When these chemicals are mixed together a chemical reaction takes place and a gas is produced in many bubbles called cells these cells harden into a rigid mass which is the urethane foam. Urethane foam is used for many useful purposes where strength, lightness of weight and its insulating quality is needed. A couple of uses you might be familiar with include surfboards refrigerator insulation, boat core material and of course signs are just a small sampling of what this durable material is used for.
So Which is better? Well ,HDU will outlast wood but wood will always look a little better and more traditional.
